£430m spent but who are the transfer window’s winners and losers?

Premier League clubs spent £430m recruiting new talent in the January transfer window.

Virgin van Dijk’s move from Southampton to Liverpool was the priciest deal of the window at £75m.

Elsewhere, Aymeric Laporte and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both switched allegiances at a total cost of £113m.

We’ve analysed all the deals and come up with our transfer window winners and losers.

Winners

Arsenal

The Gunners have been busy in the last 31 days. There are three new names at the Emirates, while five have departed.

On the face of it, Alexis Sanchez’s loss is a big blow. He has the quality to win games on his own.

But he also has a disruptive influence. With the Chilean now departed, the North Londoners are free to kick on with their season.

Aubameyang gives the club outfit renewed vigour up-front, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan should complement the new main man Mesut Ozil enormously.

Mathieu Debuchy, Theo Walcott and Francis Coquelin have also left the club in one of Arsene Wenger’s biggest clearouts in his 22-year reign.

West Bromwich Albion

Alan Pardew has pulled off a masterstroke with the signing of Daniel Sturridge.

The Liverpool ace guarantees goals for a club who currently sit rock-bottom of the Premier League.

No other team in the bottom-half can boast a finisher with his calibre and quality.

The Baggies also kept hold of Jonny Evans and look well placed to mount a bid for safety as a result.

Losers

Newcastle United

While their rivals have made strides in the market, Newcastle have stood still.

Their only acquisition of note on Deadline Day came in the form of Islam Slimani from Leicester City. The Algerian striker has a point to prove but may struggle to hit the ground running at St James’ Park.

Key areas of the pitch remain weak for Rafael Benitez. The last time that happened in January, the Toon Army were relegated.

Southampton

The Saints are sleepwalking their way towards relegation. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side are winless in 12 games in the Premier League.

So a January window which brought the sole marquee signing of Guido Carrillo will not impress the St Mary’s faithful.

The £19m capture from Monaco has a less than impressive record in front of goal and could follow in a long line of expensive up-front flops.

Southampton have failed to address key areas in January. They could now pay the price. You can back the Saints for relegation at 4/1.
