Newcastle eyeing up Watford hitman as Silva plots Hornets revamp

Newcastle United have struggled for goals since their return to the Premier League. But it seems boss Rafa Benitez could be set to fix their goal-drought, with the Magpies closing in on a move for Troy Deeney.

The North-East outfit have managed just nine league goals in 11 games at St James’ Park – the third-lowest home total of any Prem side.

Deeney has hit double figures in the past two seasons, with 10 Prem goals last term and 13 in 2016. And as the Hornets’ captain, he could offer leadership to a Newcastle side seemingly lacking big characters.

But having been hit-and-miss so far this season, Watford boss Marco Silva is believed to be willing to trade the 29-year-old in.

The gaffer’s main target in January is believed to be another top-flight striker – Benik Afobe of AFC Bournemouth.

Despite a poor first half of this campaign, there’s no doubt the Congolese international can be a handful for defences.

And with Transfermarkt.co.uk estimating his market value at £9m, this potential deal would likely make the Vicarage Road club a tidy profit if it happen.

Newcastle host League Two Luton Town this weekend, with the Magpies 1/2 for victory.
