Liverpool v Man City: Anfield thriller could be game of the season

Published:

Manchester City are more than halfway towards becoming only the third team to go unbeaten in the top division.

But the Citizens face possibly their toughest match of the campaign when they head to Liverpool.

The Reds are arguably the second-best team in the land after Pep Guardiola’s men.

Our odds have City as 5/4 favourites, but plenty will fancy the 19/10 on a Liverpool victory.

The draw is 13/5.

Sadio Mane’s first-half red card effectively killed the reverse tie in September, with City racing to a 5-0 win.

The result did continue the goal-happy nature of this fixture however. Some 45 goals have been scored in the last 13 league meetings between the two teams – an average of more than three per match.

Jurgen Klopp will fancy his chances of keeping Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and co at bay having signed Virgil van Dijk for £75m.

But with so much attacking talent on display from both sides, over 2.5 goals looks assured at 8/15, while over 3.5 is 13/10.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their 17 matches in all competitions, and have lost just two of their last 38 league games at home.

A Liverpool win and Over 2.5 goals is 3/1, while Liverpool and Over 3.5 could be great value at 11/2.

City have been caught out at times in recent weeks.

They went behind to both Bristol City and Burnley in the cup games, while only a last-minute penalty save denied Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve.

They aren’t quite reaching the heights of earlier in the season, and that could give Liverpool the chance to end their unbeaten run.

Philippe Coutinho has gone to Barcelona, but the Brazilian had been overshadowed by Mohamed Salah this season.

The Egyptian is a handy 5/1 to net first, 6/4 anytime and 7/1 for a brace or better.

For City, Sergio Aguero opened the scoring in that 5-0 win, and is 7/2 to do so again. The better value may lie with Raheem Sterling however, who is 6/1 to score first against his former club.
