AFC Bournemouth could be about to secure one of the bargains of the transfer window.

The Cherries are closing in on a move for Colchester United’s Sammie Szmodics, with a fee of £1m believed to be enough to secure his services.

The 22-year-old has been one of the top performers in League Two this term. He’s chalked up 11 goals and two assists from midfield in 20 games.

A product of the U’s youth setup, the youngster now has 100 senior appearances under his belt.

As for Bournemouth, they sit just a point above the Premier League drop zone right now. And they need some attacking inspiration, having failed to score in 10 of their last 22 league games.

Manager Eddie Howe has a good track record of bringing through talents from lower divisions – including Josh King (from Blackburn Rovers) and Callum Wilson (Coventry City).

So, can the U’s midfielder make the step up successfully? It seems we’ll find out soon, with this deal looking likely to be completed in the coming days.

Next up for Bournemouth is Sunday’s home Prem clash with Arsenal.

The Gunners lost at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup last weekend, and a Cherries win looks good value at 21/5.
