The January transfer window is fast approaching.

Clubs at the bottom will be looking to bring players in to help the survival cause. Those at the top will be looking to bolster their ranks to keep things on track.

We’re taking a look at what all 20 Premier League sides could be after in the January sales.

And Southampton are next up…

What they need

A new striker is a must to ease the pressure on Charlie Austin in particular.

Another centre-half could also be required if Virgil van Dijk completes his long-anticipated transfer away from St Mary’s.

Mauricio Pellegrino could also look to add a defensively minded midfielder to his ranks.

Who they’re targeting

Norwich City defensive-midfielder Ben Godfrey is reportedly on Southampton’s radar.

The 19-year-old has been on loan at Shrewsbury Town this season but his impressive performances have attracted the attention of a number of clubs.

Olivier Giroud has also been linked to the South Coast, as has Eibar captain Dani Garcia. The 27-year-old has been at the club since 2012 and is available for around £5m.

Who they might lose

Striker Manolo Gabbiadini could return to Serie A.

The 26-year-old has been linked to a reunion with former clubs Bologna and Sampdoria.

Van Dijk is also set to be the subject of interest for the second transfer window in a row.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are all thought to be preparing bids for the unsettled centre-half.

Final thought

January could be crucial for the Saints.

Their form prior to Christmas hints at a team in decline. If key issues are not addressed – in particular, goalscoring – then they could continue to struggle as the season goes on.

With Crystal Palace and West Ham United both showing signs of improvement, Southampton can’t afford to be left behind.
