The January transfer window is just around the corner.

Clubs at the bottom will be looking to bring players in to help the survival cause. Those at the top will be looking to bolster their ranks to keep things on track.

We’re taking a look at what all 20 Premier League sides could be after in the January sales.

And Newcastle United are next up…

What they need

The Magpies are desperately short up-front.

Dwight Gayle and Joselu have consistently struggled to find the back of the net in recent weeks.

A top-class goalkeeper could also be on the agenda.

Willy Caballero was close to joining in the summer but a deal for the stopper fell through. Rafael Benitez may also look for midfield reinforcements.

Who they’re targeting

Olivier Giroud, Islam Slimani, Danny Ings and Kevin Gameiro have all been mentioned as possible big name additions in the striking department.

Any one of those three would give the Magpies a different dimension going forward.

Samuel Grandsir of Troyes has also been touted as a potential signing on the wing. The 21-year-old has lit up Ligue 1 so far this season.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is also on Benitez’s raider.

Who they might lose

Aleksandar Mitrovic appears to be the most likely departure from St James’ Park in January.

A clutch of Championship clubs are rumoured to be keen on the Serbian.

Jack Colback, signed from Sunderland in 2014, is also free to leave the club. Bristol City lead the chase for the 28-year-old.

Final thought

Much of Newcastle’s rumoured transfer activity depends on the future ownership of the club.

Rafa Benitez will have some funds to use even if Mike Ashley remains in control.

But if Amanda Staveley and her consortium complete a takeover in time, then there could be cash to splash on Tyneside.

And given their current predicament, reinforcements are certainly needed for the Magpies.
