Here’s what Bournemouth need to do in the January window

Published:

January is nearly here and the mid-season transfer window is almost open.

It has its critics, but the window allows clubs and players to make vital changes.

The Ladbrokes News team are profiling all 20 Premier League clubs.

Here it’s Bournemouth’s turn to go under the spotlight…

What they need

The Cherries have problems at both ends. They aren’t scoring too often and they’re conceding far too many.

They have goalscorers in Callum Wilson, Josh King and Jermain Defoe, so it’s the supply which needs to improve.

Who they’re targeting

The Cherries rarely do their shopping on the continent, so they’ll be looking to British clubs.

Nottingham Forest’s Barrie McKay could – and should – be on their wishlist.

The 22-year-old has impressed with five goals and seven assists for the Championship club this season.

As for a more defensive midfield option, the Cherries could loan Mohamed Elneny or Francis Coquelin from Arsenal, much like they did with Jack Wilshere last season.

Who they might lose

To be honest, nobody in a Cherries’ shirt is courting too many admirers this season.

Benik Afobe may start to look elsewhere to get more playing time, but Eddie Howe is unlikely to be worrying about losing anyone in January.

Final thought

Bournemouth have done exceptionally well to do what they’ve done over the past seven years.

But if they want to maintain their place at the top table, they’re going to have to invest smartly in the mid-season window.
