Aston Villa boss Bruce targeting forgotten Prem pair in January

The January transfer window is looming, and reports suggest Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce has a couple of Premier League strikers on his post-Christmas wish list.

The men in question are Leicester City’s Leonardo Ulloa and Nahki Wells of Burnley.

Both are out of favour at their current clubs, and could well be tempted by a move to the upwardly-mobile Villans.

Ulloa played a big part in Leicester City’s title-winning side of 2015-16, but has gradually fallen down the pecking order at the King Power Stadium.

He’s proven in the Championship too, having netted 14 times at this level for Brighton & Hove Albion in 2013-14. With undoubted quality and a wealth of experience, the 31-year-old would surely thrive at this level again.

Wells is in a similar situation. Despite netting double-figures in three consecutive Championship campaigns before this term, he hasn’t played a minute of football since leaving Huddersfield Town for Burnley in the summer.

Strikers certainly appear to be the major issue for Villa this term.

While winger Albert Adomah has been prolific, the West Midlands club are currently the lowest-scoring club in the top seven. None of their strikers have managed more than two league goals this term.

With Villa just seven points off the automatic promotion spots, buying a pair of proven strikers could be the difference-maker in the club’s push to reach the Prem.

Next up for Aston Villa is a trip to Derby County this weekend. The visitors are 23/10 to beat the Rams for the fifth time in eight meetings.
