Watford v Man United: Hornets can sting Mourinho’s title hopes

Published:

Manchester United’s midweek game takes them to Watford, and know that only a win will suffice.

Jose Mourinho’s men were poor in their 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion, and then watched 24 hours later as City netted a late winner away at Huddersfield Town.

It means Pep Guardiola’s side remain a solid eight points clear at the top.

So United can’t afford to slip up at Vicarage Road as they did in a 3-1 defeat last term.

But that will be easier said than done. The Hornets are a dangerous side under Marco Silva, a man compared by many to his Portuguese compatriot Mourinho.

The odds have United at 4/6 favouritism, the hosts 4/1 and the draw at 14/5.

Watford are on a high after wins over West Ham United and Newcastle United.

And they’ve shown no fear against the so-called big six this term either. The Hertfordshire side grabbed a deserved point against Liverpool on the opening weekend.

They then came from behind to beat Arsenal and had a plethora of chances to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Quick, organised and powerful, the Hornets can match pretty much anyone.

United have lost three of their last four away games in all competitions, and appear to be flagging after lacklustre performances versus Basel and Brighton.

There’s great value in the Watford/Draw Double Chance at 23/20.

They’re entertaining too. After 13 games of the campaign only Manchester City have seen more goals at both ends than the Hornets’ 43.

Over 2.5 goals is 4/5, as is Both Teams to Score. Eight of the last 10 meetings have seen three or more goals scored.

Will Hughes is just one of many Watford players in form.

The former Derby County man scored in both of his side’s wins over the Hammers and Newcastle.

We’re 14/1 Hughes nets the opener, although 9/2 anytime could be the shrewd option.
