Wales boss backed in from 16/1 to just 1/5 for Sunderland job

Following a seismic shift in the market, Wales manager Chris Coleman now looks nailed on to be Sunderland’s next manager. The experienced gaffer has seen his odds slashed from 16/1 into just 1/5 following an avalanche of bets.

That means the 47-year-old is shorter than any other runner in this market since previous Black Cats boss Simon Grayson was shown the back door at the end of October.

The former Coventry City boss took Wales to the Semi-Finals of Euro 2016, but having failed to qualify for World Cup 2018, he looks set to be tempted by reviving the fortunes of the Wearside club.

Earlier this week, the job looked to be going to Barnsley gaffer Paul Heckingbottom, with the former Sunderland youth player firm favourite to get the gig. But Coleman’s emergence as firm favourite has seen the Tykes boss drift to 5/1.

He’s followed in the market by Ally McCoist and Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill at 7/1 apiece.

Meanwhile, former Middlesbrough gaffer Aitor Karanka is 8/1 to take the gig with their North-East rivals, while current Sunderland defender John O’Shea is 16/1 to move from the pitch to the dugout at the Stadium of Light.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “This job looked like it had Heckingbottom’s name on it earlier this week, but with Coleman now thought to be considering his future it’s led to punters backing him right in to record short odds in this market.”
