Everton’s humiliating home defeat to Atalanta could spell the end for David Unsworth’s chances of landing the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

Following the Toffees’ 5-1 home reverse to the Italian side, caretaker boss Unsworth has seen his odds lengthen to 4/1 from 5/2 yesterday.

The ex-Blues defender has presided over four defeats while in temporary charge at Goodison Park.

And this latest loss looks like it could be the one which finally puts the nail in the coffin for the 44-year-old’s chances.

It means that Ralf Rangnick and Marco Silva now stand as the two clear favourites for the role.

RB Leipzig Sporting Director Rangnick was installed as the 6/4 favourite yesterday afternoon, despite not even having a price a fortnight ago.

Watford boss Silva has long been the target for Everton chairman Farhad Moshiri.

But after the Hornets rebuffed a £20m approach from the Blues hierarchy for their main man, it doesn’t appear likely that the 2/1 shot will be making the switch.

Sam Allardyce remains an option at 8/1, while Louis van Gaal and Sean Dyche are both available at 12/1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “If these last six games have been Unsworth’s audition for the Everton gig, then they couldn’t have gone worse for the former Toffee, and it now looks like a two-horse race between Rangnick and Silva for the vacancy.”
