Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca has emerged as a surprise candidate for the vacant Everton job.

A flurry of bets for Fonseca has seen his our traders slash his odds from 50/1 to just 5/4.

He’s now second-favourite to replace Ronald Koeman after Sam Allardyce. The former England boss is now 4/5, though he was as short as 1/7 before the punts on Fonseca.

Fonseca led Shakthar to the domestic double in Ukraine last season. His side have troubled Manchester City and beaten Serie A leaders Napoli in the Champions League this term.

Koeman was sacked over a month ago and Allardyce is the sixth candidate to be odds-on for the position.

The Toffees are 16th in the table, two points above the drop zone. They’ve lost five of the seven games they’ve played under caretaker boss David Unsworth.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It seems as though Everton can’t give this job away right now, and while it looked nailed on that Allardyce would take over, a substantial move on Fonseca has blown the market wide open again.”
