Kevin Phillips is the early favourite to be named Sunderland’s next permanent manager.

The Black Cats parted ways with Simon Grayson on Tuesday night and the ex-striker is currently 4/1 for the vacant role.

That puts him ahead of Peter Reid, Kevin Ball and former Middlesbrough boss, Aitor Karanka, who are all 6/1 respectively.

Meanwhile, the bookies have already trimmed odds of Ryan Giggs being given his first permanent management role from 9/1 to 8/1 following interest in the Man United legend overnight from punters.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It’s early days and we’ve already chopped and changed the market but one thing that’s remained the same is the favourite in the Next Sunderland Manager betting.

As things stand supporters could soon be preparing for a reunion with Phillips in their dugout.”
