Meet the form team in League One – Charlton Athletic

Published:

Shrewsbury Town are top of the table and Wigan Athletic are odds-on favourites, but neither are the form team in League One right now.

That honour goes to Charlton Athletic, who are going superbly under Karl Robinson.

The South-East Londoners are unbeaten in seven games.

And in the last five fixtures they’ve collected a league-best 13 points.

Wigan have gained 11 in that spell, while Shrewsbury have picked up only eight.

Charlton sit seven points off the leaders, but they do have a game in hand.

The Addicks have endured a trying few years, falling into the third tier twice.

And the club have made headlines for the wrong reasons after fans protested against the club’s owners.

But for now, things are good – on the pitch at least.

Charlton ended last season on a high with four wins and a draw in their final five games.

Robinson has built on that with a number of smart acquisitions in the summer transfer window.

Ben Amos has arrived to provide quality and stability in goal on a temporary move from Bolton Wanderers, while left-back Jay Dasilva has brought pace and energy on-loan from Chelsea.

The star addition so far however, is Tariqe Fosu.

The 22-year-old winger was signed from Reading on a two-year deal, and is revelling at the Valley.

Fosu has started every league game for Athletic this season, and is the club’s top scorer with seven goals.

A perfect hat-trick in the 3-1 win away at Fleetwood Town showcased all of his ability.

Robinson is also making the most of a strong defensive unit.

Skipper Chris Solly has missed just one game this season at right-back, as has the aforementioned Dasilva.

German centre-half Patrick Bauer has played every minute of the campaign, and has enjoyed consistent company alongside him from Ezri Konsa and Jason Pearce.

That defence has conceded only one goal in the last four fixtures.

And in midfield, Jake Forster-Caskey is running the show. The 23-year-old arrived in January after a stop-start few years at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Now one of the first names on the team-sheet, the former England U21 international is thriving, bagging three goals while providing four assists.

Up front, Billy Clarke has arrived from Bradford City to support Josh Magennis.

Both strikers boast plenty of experience at this level, and have been given plenty of support with Fosu and Ricky Holmes on the flanks.

Our traders make Charlton 2/1 to go up, with only three sides priced up at shorter odds.

But on current form, the Addicks are still great value, and with so much of the season remaining, the 10/1 on Robinson’s men to win the league shouldn’t be ignored.
