League One Round-Up: Who could go up or down?

With over a third of the season gone, the League One table has begun to fall into place.

We’ve now got an idea of the teams that will be competing for promotion at the end of the campaign.

And the sides at the other end who’ll be battling to avoid the drop.

We’ve taken a look at the contenders at both ends of the table.

Who could go up?

Shrewsbury Town

Many tipped Shrewsbury to go down this term. But they’ve gone from strength to strength under Paul Hurst.

The former Grimsby boss saved the Shrews from the drop last season.

Now they’re riding high at the top of the table after making the best start to a campaign in the club’s history.

Hurst’s side were the only unbeaten side in the Football League before last weekend’s loss away to Peterborough United. They’re 7/4 to go up.

Wigan Athletic

Wigan are a point behind Shrewsbury in second. They’re clear favourites at 1/7 to secure promotion and 4/9 to win the title.

They’ve scored the most goals and conceded the least in the division so far.

The Latics’ two league defeats have both come on the road. They’ve only lost once at the DW Stadium in league action since December 2015. Paul Cook’s side could keep that run going for a while if they keep up their current form.

Charlton Athletic

Charlton are fourth, level with third-placed Bradford City on 30 points.

They’ve been much improved this season under Karl Robinson, after making several smart additions during the summer.

The Addicks are unbeaten in seven league games and are 2/1 to go up.

Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn were relegated on goal difference last season and it took them a while to get going in the current campaign.

Rovers lost both of their opening two games. But they’ve found their footing now. They’ve only lost two of their last 12 league fixtures.

Tony Mowbray’s side are seventh, one point outside the play-off places. Our traders see them climbing higher and have them as second-favourites for promotion at 13/10.

Who could go down?

Plymouth Argyle

Rock-bottom Plymouth have only won two games in the league all season. They’ve only scored more than one goal in a single game. It’s no surprise they’re joint-favourites for the drop at 2/7.

The Pilgrims have put a run of four games without defeat together. However, they’ve got some tough fixtures on the horizon.

Gillingham

Gillingham are the other team at 2/7 to be relegated. Ady Pennock left the club in late September and he still hasn’t been replaced. Steve Lovell is currently caretaker manager.

The Gills ended last season in dismal form and haven’t been much better this time round.

The Kent-based club are in 18th place with 14 points. They’ve won both of their last two games on the road. But their home form has been dire – they’ve only got six points from eight games at Priestfield Stadium.

Northampton Town

Northampton Town are also odds on to play in League Two next year. They’re 4/6 to be relegated.

They’re currently one point above the bottom three. They’ll need to improve at both ends to avoid being sucked in.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s men have conceded 26 goals but only scored 13.

Bury

Bury sacked Lee Clark earlier this week after a run of three wins in 16 league games.

Something had to change, as our traders have the Shakers at 5/6 to be relegated.

The Manchester club have lost 10 games so far, more than any other side in the division.
