Ladbrokes World Series of Darts Finals: Can Van Gerwen win again?

A World Series that has taken in Dubai, Shanghai, Las Vegas and Melbourne amongst others concludes this weekend with the Ladbrokes World Series of Darts Finals in Glasgow.

In what promises to be a sensational three days of tungsten tossing action, it’s Michael van Gerwen who starts as the 10/11 favourite.

MVG returned to form last week to win the European Championship in Belgium.

And after clocking up an incredible 108.91 average in his 11-7 victory over Rob Cross in the final, the Dutch destroyer is the one to fear once again.

The 28-year-old maestro is the only player to have won this event in its two-year history, and that makes him the man to beat in Glasgow.

But in a packed field of 24 players, there are plenty of chances to be had away from the odds-on favourite.

Scottish pair Gary Anderson and Peter Wright will be looking to provide fireworks for the home crowd at odds of 4/1 and 13/2 respectively.

It’s Anderson who makes more appeal of the two, with his number one ranking securing the 46-year-old a more favourable draw.

Mensur Suljovic will need to come through the first round as a qualifier and is 16/1 to continue his good form in 2017 as a result.

Meanwhile, Raymond van Barneveld and the extremely dangerous Rob Cross will be looking to spring a shock at 18/1 apiece.

Cross provides the value of the two, especially after his impressive showing to reach the final of the European Championship last weekend.

The former electrician has enjoyed one of the best debut seasons ever of a player on the Pro Tour and must be considered for this tournament as an each-way shout.

Of the longer-odds shots, Daryl Gurney makes huge appeal at 25/1. The Northern Irishman has had a breakthrough year on the circuit and has made the quarter-finals of 10 of the last 11 TV tournaments.

Form like that can’t be argued with, especially following his dominant showing when winning the World Matchplay title last month.

Sparking similar interest at even longer odds is Corey Cadby.

The Australian wonderkid has only ever played one senior tournament in the UK, but that shouldn’t deter you from his odds of 33/1.

That’s because Cadby is one of the most talented youngsters in darts. In reaching the final of the Auckland Masters earlier this year, the 22-year-old saw off Simon Whitlock, Michael Smith and Phil Taylor.

If the Aussie slinger plays to his tip-top potential, then he’s undoubtedly the value-pick in a quality field.
