Montrose striker Craig Johnston is the Ladbrokes League Two Player of the Month for October.

Johnston was the match-winner in each of Montrose’s 1-0 victories last month over Edinburgh City and Berwick Rangers.

And the former Cowdenbeath man also grabbed a double in the 4-1 Scottish Cup win over Stirling University.

Johnston has cited Gable Endies boss Stewart Petrie as a major influence because he was a striker in his playing days with Dunfermline.

He said: “When the gaffer got in touch with me it was an easy decision. With him being a striker, he said he would help me with my game and it was exactly what I needed.

“Since I have been there he has been really good and he’s definitely developing me as a player.

“It’s been really good for me. It’s done a lot for my confidence.

“Having just joined the club I wanted to get going as quickly as possible and scoring the winner in the last two matches has been brilliant.

“I had been with Cowdenbeath for six years and I felt it was time for me to get out there and push myself elsewhere.

“Only a year ago Montrose were struggling but they made the play-offs last season and turned it right round.

“So I think there is a feeling that this is the minimum that we need to achieve this season but, of course, we would love to win the league.”
