Anthony Joshua 1/3 favourite for BBC SPOTY; Hamilton next at 9/1

Anthony Joshua looks set to become the first boxer to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award since Joe Calzaghe in 2007.

The unbeaten British fighter is now as short as 1/3 to walk away with the award following his tenth round stoppage of Carlos Takam on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, who last won the award in 2014, is a 9/1 chance to follow up his fourth F1 Drivers’ World Championship with a second SPOTY success.

By winning the title in Mexico on Sunday, the 32-year-old Mercedes ace surpassed Sir Jackie Stewart as Britain’s most successful F1 driver.

But how much sway will that hold with the voters?

Another who’ll need some luck is Tour de France hero Chris Froome at odds of 10/1.

Ordinarily, a four-time Tour winner wouldn’t be such a long-price. But in what has been a bumper year of British sporting success, Froome appears unlikely to emulate Bradley Wiggins’ SPOTY win from 2012.

Mo Farah and Jermain Defoe round-off the sub 20/1 shots at 16/1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “AJ has done all he can to make a case for the SPOTY award, but confirmation of Hamilton’s win this weekend has given the champion driver a chance to pip the favourite to the post on the final straight.”
