Stenhousemuir have done the Ladbrokes League 2 awards double for September. Striker Mark McGuigan has been named the Player of the Month, while boss Brown Ferguson has won the managerial award.

The 28-year-old netted five times in four games during the month, including doubles against Berwick Rangers and Edinburgh City. McGuigan’s good form has helped Ferguson take this Stenny side up to second in the table.

We spoke exclusively to both men following the awards, starting with Ochilview’s goal-getter. While he was delighted with the award, McGuigan was also keen to look ahead, telling us:

“I’ve scored in every league game we’ve played apart from one so I’m delighted but I can’t dwell on it because we haven’t even played a quarter of the season yet.”

The Warriors star continued: “I’ve dropped a division but I was never concerned about that. I just wanted to play for a manager who firstly wanted me and secondly wanted me to play through the middle and get the goals.”

He certainly has got the goals, and boss Brown Ferguson had plenty of positive words for the club’s striking star.

The Stenny manager explained: “The way Mark has been scoring – and the different type of goals – has been a real plus point for us.” He added: “has all the right attributes in terms of work ethic and character”.

However, the experienced gaffer also had plenty of praise for his squad at a whole, explaining “It’s been a fantastic month for Mark, but we have also had a great defensive record, conceding only one goal, so that’s the foundation for us.”

As it stands, Stenhousemuir are 5/2 second-favourites to lift the League 2 title.
