Nicola McGeady reports from Breakfast With the Best as Winx fever hits the nation!

Winx

There is only one celebrity around Melbourne this week and that is Winx.

Never before have I witnessed such excitement around a horse.

Whatever news channel I switch to, Winx is at the top of each sports bulletin, while the newspapers rush to give her the column inches she so deserves.

At 5.30am, most people would be tucked up in bed enjoying their last few hours of sleep before getting on with their day. However, that wasn’t the case here in Melbourne this morning.

I arrived at Moonee Valley at 5.30am, assuming I would be one of the first people on site for Breakfast With The Best. How wrong I was.

Hundreds of Winx fans were already at the track to catch a glimpse of Melbourne’s biggest star.

Free bacon sandwiches, tea, and coffee was served to all, while Winx made it worth the early start as she delighted spectators with her final bit of track-work before her bid to reach a record-equalling third Ladbrokes Cox Plate victory.

After she completed her work, trainer Chris Waller spent 15 minutes chatting to the media.

He was delighted that the crowds respected her workout and didn’t start cheering as she went by, while her jockey Hugh Bowman couldn’t be happier with how everything went.

At long odds-on, surely nobody can beat her, and as for her rivals, well it’s a case of who can finish second.
