According to reports in Italy, Manchester United are hot on the heels of Lazio’s midfield wonder kid, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The 22-year-old has had a breakout season for the Rome giants with a number of clubs keeping tabs on the Serb.

Among those rumoured to be interested are Manchester City and Liverpool. However, it’s Man United who are leading the queue.

Jose Mourinho is said to be a big admirer of the former Genk youngster who has been dominating midfields in Serie A this term.

Lazio valued Milinkovic-Savic at around £60m and at the current market rate that looks a snip.

At 6ft 3in, the Serbia international is big and powerful. But he also has a remarkable grace and agility, too.

He glides across the pitch and is a fantastic dribbler. His ability to take the ball into tight areas and slalom his way out of tackles has caught the eye.

With his physical characteristics and style of play, he is particularly similar to Yaya Toure.

With United’s midfield an area Mourinho is looking to address, links to the Biancocelesti star will come as no surprise.

At 36-years-old, Michael Carrick’s time at Old Trafford is coming to an end. Maraoune Fellaini and Ander Herrera are both out of contract at the end of the season.

That leaves Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba as the remaining central midfielders in the Red Devils squad.

The arrival of Milinkovic-Savic would certainly freshen up that area and add extra physicality and mobility.

His agent – ex-Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman – has been talking up interest in his player recently. But has also been at pains to point out the youngster is happy where he is – for now.

When Manchester United come calling, though, it’s difficult to say no. Watch this space.
