Following Wayne Rooney’s retirement from international duty, there’s been plenty of speculation on the identity of the next England captain.

However, our odds-crunchers are confident the armband is going to Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson.

The 27-year-old has been the captain at Anfield since 2015, and he now looks set to lead the Three Lions out against Slovenia on Thursday night, at odds of 4/9.

He’s followed in the betting by Tottenham Hotspur hitman Harry Kane, who is 6/4 to be given the honour by boss Gareth Southgate.

Those two look the only likely contenders, though Gary Cahill (10/1) is an outside shot to captain the side. Meanwhile, Joe Hart closes out the betting at odds of 33/1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Kane has stolen the limelight so far this season, but the latest odds suggest Gareth Southgate will be sticking with Henderson when it comes to leading England out at Wembley on Thursday night.”

In the match betting, England are 1/3 favourites for victory at Wembley, with likely captain Henderson 6/1 to get on the scoresheet anytime.
