Impressive Burnley can make the 2017-18 season one to remember

Published:

Burnley fans couldn’t have envisaged just how well they’d start the 2017-18 Premier League season.

After six games the Clarets sit pretty in sixth on 12 points.

Their impressive points tally doesn’t tell the whole story, however.

The Lancashire club have already played four teams from the ‘so-called’ top seven.

And in those four fixtures, Sean Dyche’s charges are unbeaten.

The Turf Moor club have won away at Chelsea and Everton and taken points from Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

In total, they’ve picked up eight points from their opening four away games.

That tally already eclipses their total of seven points on the road from the whole of last season.

While their home form hasn’t been as consistent as we’ve come to expect, we’re sure that’ll pick up in the long term.

Their good form has us wondering, what could Burnley achieve this season?

FA Cup looks a realistic opportunity

While a Champions League berth is unrealistic at 150/1, there’s nothing to suggest that the Turf Moor club can’t finish inside the top-10 at 3/1.

However, even more appealing are their Emirates FA Cup odds.

Dyche’s men are hugely overpriced at 50/1 to win the Wembley showpiece.

They certainly have the defensive capabilities to mount a challenge.

In Dyche, they have one of the best organisers in the Premier League.

The 46-year-old has his side well-drilled, compact and resourceful when they do have the ball.

Burnley have the fifth best shots-to-goal ratio in the Premier League.

What’s even more impressive in that regard is that the Clarets have only managed 61 shots – the second lowest in the division.

When the Lancashire club get chances they take them.

As a result we’re backing Burnley for their best top-flight season since 1975.

They finished tenth that year.

And like the current campaign they avoided defeat at Goodison Park, Stamford Bridge, Anfield and Tottenham.

The 2017-18 incarnation are just as industrious, efficient and hard-to-beat as the crop 40 years ago, and should continue their impressive early season form.
