Here’s why Celtic can cause an upset away to Bayern Munich

Celtic may be 13/2 to take a point or more from Wednesday night’s visit to Bayern Munich, but a closer look at things shows the Hoops could pull off a big surprise in Bavaria.

Here’s why we think Brendan Rodgers men can upset the odds at the Allianz Arena…

Celtic impressing on the continent

Few outside of Glasgow expected the Bhoys to take anything from last season’s Champions League trips to face the likes of Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach.

However, they proved the doubters wrong with a pair of draws against Pep Guardiola’s men, as well as a point against Die Fohlen in Germany.

Still, neither of those achievements matched what Rodgers’ charges achieved in their last UCL game. Celtic chalked up a 3-0 victory away at Anderlecht, making them the only visitors to win by three or more goals at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in the past three years – an 85-game stretch.

Bayern unusually sloppy of late

There’s little doubt that Der FCB have been one of Europe’s top clubs throughout the last decade, but right now they’re enduring a very uncharacteristic dip in form.

They’ve won just one of the past four games, with the solitary victory against a dismal Freiburg side.

In that period, Bayern have thrown away first-half leads against both Wolfsburg and Hertha BSC (drawing both games 2-2), and suffered a 3-0 rout at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

That will give Celtic plenty of encouragement, as should the Bavarians’ propensity for a shock European failure.

Munich lost 3-2 at home to FC Rostov in November 2016, and failed to beat Benfica earlier in that year. Going a little further back, there was also 2012’s humiliating 3-1 loss to BATE Borisov.

With Der FCB surrendering leads on multiple occasions in the past month, the 40/1 for Half Time/Full Time: Bayern Munich/Draw looks well worth a flutter.

Hoops have goals throughout the side

While Bayern’s defence might be able to contain one in-form goalscorer, the Bhoys offer a more complex challenge for the current Bundesliga champions.

Eight different players have found the net for Celtic during their past six games, with Callum McGregor and Leigh Griffiths in especially strong form of late.

With plenty of pace coursing throughout the visitors’ ranks, they could well wear down their illustrious hosts.

Add the absence of injured centre-back Javi Martinez for the hosts, and the 5/1 for Celtic to score 2+ Goals could prove a savvy bet.

In the match betting, Der FCB are 1/10 for victory, with Celtic 28/1 to pull off a famous win, and 9/1 about the draw.
