Crystal Palace’s goal drought showed no signs of letting up in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Manchester United. But despite the Eagles’ dismal start to the season, help could soon be at hand, in the form of Alberto Gilardino.

The 35-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Pescara during the summer. However, he could soon be plying his trade in the Premier League, with new Palace boss Roy Hodgson keen to secure the veteran’s services.

Gilardino certainly has plenty of pedigree. The former Fiorentina ace has hit double figures in 10 different Serie A campaigns, most recently in 2015-16.

Having also lifted the World Cup and Champions League trophies during his career, his experience could prove vital if the South London club can bring him in.

Hodgson certainly needs to add a striker as soon as possible. The Eagles are the only side in the top eight tiers of English football yet to find the net, while their seven successive blanks to start the season is also an unwanted Premier League first.

With Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham both out injured for some time, it’s likely Hodgson will look to wrap the deal up quickly. And with Gilardino keen to return to action, it’s possible we’ll see him take to the Selhurst Park turf next weekend.

Next up for the Eagles is that home encounter against Chelsea on Saturday week, with 17/2 available for the hosts to bag a much-needed first league win. Meanwhile, the Double Chance: Crystal Palace or Draw can be backed at 11/5.
