Alexandra Burke unseats Aston Merrygold as Strictly favourite

Move over Aston Merrygold, there’s a new favourite for the Glitterball Trophy following a sensational weekend of Strictly Come Dancing action.

Alexandra Burke is now 2/1 to win the series after scoring three perfect 10s in her routine on Saturday night.

The singer dazzled alongside partner Gorka Marquez with their jive to Tina Turner’s classic hit Proud Mary.

That incredible performance has leapfrogged Burke above Aston Merrygold in the betting, with the former JLS man now a 5/2 fancy.

Could that open the door for Gemma Atkinson?

After starting the competition as a 9/1 outsider, the ex-Emmerdale and Hollyoaks star is now just a 4/1 chance to become the first female winner since 2014.

Her impressive performances in recent weeks have made the judges sit up and take note.

And we now fancy the 32-year-old as a real dark horse for the entire competition.

By contrast, Debbie McGee’s odds have been more up and down than Anne Widdecombe on a zip wire.

Despite coming in to third favourite a fortnight ago, McGee’s chances have now cooled to a modest 8/1.

Jonnie Peacock remains in the midfield at 12/1, while Joe McFadden and Mollie King, who were both fancied before the series began, are now considered outsiders at 16/1.

They’re followed by 20/1 shot Davood Ghadami and Susan Calman at 50/1.

We then have a break to the last three in the betting, all of whom have clung on for another week.

Brian Conley and Ruth Langsford are the likeliest of the unlikely lot at 100/1.

Meanwhile, Simon Rimmer, who has been dicing with elimination for the last two weeks, is now out on his own at 150/1 for a remarkable series victory.
