Our F1 expert eyes Vettel and Verstappen in Singapore

The run-in for the 2017 Formula 1 championship gathers pace with the start of the flyaway races in Singapore, kicking off a spell of seven races in 11 weeks to end the season.

After back-to-back victories in Belgium and Italy, Lewis Hamilton leads the drivers’ championship for the first time this season. But the Mercedes star is expected to face a battle to hold on to that position in Singapore this weekend.

The spectacular night race often throws up unpredictable results and dramatic fights.

So here are three markets to look out for at the Marina Bay circuit…

Sebastian Vettel to win @ 5/4

After a humbling result at Ferrari’s home race in Italy – where he finished half a minute adrift of Hamilton – Vettel will be looking to bounce back in Singapore.

The German has won here on four occasions, excelling in 2015 when Mercedes struggled to get the most out of its tyres compared to Ferrari.

Having already won in Monaco and Hungary this season – tracks with similar characteristics to Singapore – Vettel will start the weekend eyeing a return to the top step.

Max Verstappen to finish on the podium @ 5/4

While Daniel Ricciardo has been on the podium five times as well as winning in Azerbaijan, it is surprising that Verstappen has only secured one podium all season.

Poor reliability has often been his undoing, but the Dutchman is driving well and Red Bull should be competitive in Singapore.

The only concern is if he over-drives with Red Bull an outside bet for victory. You can also get the teenager at 15/2 to win.

Palmer to finish in the points @ 5/2

It appears Jolyon Palmer’s time in F1 is up, with the Briton losing his Renault seat to Carlos Sainz next season, and potentially after this race if his team can get him out of his contract.

He has only scored one point in his career so far and is yet bag a top-ten this season. But Palmer has shown flashes of pace and the Renault should work in Singapore, so it would be fitting – if somewhat surprising – for him to sign off with a top ten result.
