Man City and Liverpool in hunt for Leipzig’s star man Werner

Published:

Red Bull Leipzig’s Timo Werner is already looking like he will play a huge role in next summer’s transfer activity.

The 21-year-old broke onto the scene in style last season, netting 21 times in the Bundesliga as Leipzig finished a superb second.

And with four goals in four domestic games this season, Werner is on course for an even better campaign this time around.

Werner has maintained that form for Germany too, bagging six goals from eight appearances for his country this year.

His performances have seen him linked with the Premier League’s big hitters, including Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Manchester United.

But they’ll have to fight off the attentions of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

According to our odds, it’s Real who are favourites to win this transfer race at 7/2.

The La Liga champions sold Alvaro Morata to Chelsea this summer, and boss Zinedine Zidane is reportedly keen to fill that void next summer.

Man City at 4/1 and Liverpool at 9/2 head the Premier League options. The latter have already done business with Leipzig, having agreed to sign Naby Keita next summer.

Leipzig have Werner tied down until 2020, and it’s believed the deal does not include any release clauses.

So it remains to be seen if they decide to sell.

Werner began his career with VfB Stuttgart, having come through the youth ranks with the Reds.

He made his Bundesliga debut aged just 17-years-old in August 2013, and scored his first top-flight goal the following month.

And after three years with Stuttgart, Werner was the man chosen to lead Leipzig’s first foray into the Bundesliga, signing for £10m in 2016.

It was the club’s biggest ever transfer, but the striker quickly proved a bargain.
