Harry Angel to outgun Brando in Haydock Sprint Cup Showdown
After a thrilling battle in the Darley July Cup, the sprinters are back to contest the Haydock Sprint Cup this weekend.
It promises to be a fascinating renewal up on Merseyside as the super speedsters go to battle over 6f.
The market leader ahead of the race is Harry Angel.
Clive Cox’s charge landed the July Cup from Limato, Brando and Caravaggio, all three of whom he could line-up alongside in the stalls on Saturday. Dream Ahead was the last horse to mastermind a July Cup and Sprint Cup double in 2011. But this Godolphin runner looks well set to create his own piece of history.
It’s been a demanding season for the three-year-old. But we think he’s got another big performance left in him at 7/4.
Brando, who finished third at Newmarket in the July Cup, is second in the betting here. The 7/2 shot was ridden out by Adam Kirby at Deauville last month to claim a maiden Group 1 success. He has the form but does he have the pace to outgun Harry Angel over his favoured 6f?
The Tin Man has the experience behind him at 7/1. He finished second in this renewal last year and will relish similar soft conditions this time around. With the rain set to fall in the coming days and a record of seven wins from 14 runs at 6f behind him, James Fanshawe’s runner is certainly an enticing prospect.
Tasleet (7/1) could only finish tenth in the July Cup, eventually coming in 5¾l off the pace.
Limato is the one to watch at a handy price of 15/2. Everybody knows what this five-year-old is capable of on his day. However, his day hasn’t come nearly often enough. He remains without a Group 1 success since a 3l victory at Chantilly in 2016 and the expected rain is another negative.
Blue Point (8/1) and Caravaggio (9/1) both hold claims at handy prices. The pair have both beaten market leader Harry Angel over 6f this season. Blue Point appears the more likely to run here, though. He’s fresh after a long layoff following his Commonwealth Cup defeat to Caravaggio and could challenge.
Magical Memory (14/1) and Growl (33/1) should not be ruled out as each-way shouts.
