Who is… Tottenham’s imminent record-signing Davinson Sanchez?
It’s been a quiet, long summer for Tottenham Hotspur fans, but finally they have something to shout about.
According to several reports in the press, Spurs are set to make a signing – and a big one too.
The North Londoners are about to splash out a club record £42m on Ajax centre-half Davinson Sanchez.
But who is Tottenham’s new man?
Born in Coloto, North-East Colombia, Sanchez came through the youth system at native giants Atletico Nacional.
His senior debut came in October 2013, just four months after turning 17-years-old.
After spending his first few years being gradually eased into the first-team, Sanchez’s breakout campaign came with 30 appearances in 2016.
It wasn’t long before scouts were sniffing around, and Ajax won the race with a £4m deal last summer.
Time and time again we see players take time to settle when moving from South America to Europe, but that hasn’t been the case with the 21-year-old.
The 6ft 2in defender was thrown straight into the Dutch giants’ first-team, and slotted right in, making 46 appearances in all competitions.
He made 32 starts as Ajax finished second in the Eredivisie, and was equally important in the club’s run to the Europa League final, starting 12 games.
And with Sanchez helping his side to 15 clean sheets in the league, with another five in European competition, his impact was immediate.
Tottenham fans will be hoping to see benefits at the other end of the pitch too, with Sanchez netting six times last season, mainly from corners.
Blessed with pace, comfortable on the ball, strong in the tackle and a threat in the air, Sanchez boasts all the attributes that Mauricio Pochettino seeks at Spurs.
His arrival will add welcome competition and depth to the Tottenham back-line, while it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him slot in alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld at the back should Pochettino opt for three in defence.
