St Johnstone have enjoyed a stellar start to the Ladbrokes Premiership campaign. Three games, three wins and a spot at the top of the table. But things could be about to get even better, with Saints having now captured Denny Johnstone on loan.

The 22-year-old spent last season on the books of Colchester United. Flashes of quality aside – including a crucial winner against Cambridge United – the youngster struggled to find his best form in England.

Despite that, his prior experience proves the Dumfries-born striker has plenty of potential. Having shone for Celtic in the UEFA Youth League, he went on to play for Birmingham City in the EFL Championship.

However, it was at Cappielow where his star has shone brightes. In a hugely competitive Ladbrokes Championship, the striker bagged 14 goals for Greenock Morton, chalking up nine assists in the process.

There’s also plenty of reason to believe he’d be a good fit for Tommy Wright’s Saints.

A strong physical presence who can hold the ball up well, but also possesses plenty of pace, the 22-year-old will provide a neat foil for Saints’ tricky but less imposing forward men like Steven MacLean and Graham Cummins.

With the deal also a loan capture, he’s a no-risk addition for the Perth club, and the striker will be keen to prove his worth again following a patchy spell south of the border.

Next up for St Johnstone is a trip to Celtic on Saturday. There’s 19/5 about the Perth club grabbing a point or more, while 9/2 says Denny bags a debut goal.
