Sheffield Wednesday lead Hull and Leeds in chase for Brentford ace

Sheffield Wednesday got their first taste of new season cheer with a 4-1 Carabao Cup rout of Chesterfield on Tuesday night. But a more significant boost could be on the cards, with the Owls closing in on the signing of Brentford defender Harlee Dean.

Nobody has played a bigger part in the Bees’ success in recent years than the rock-solid centre back. Having joined – initially as a loanee – in 2011, the powerful defender has now chalked up 246 appearances for the club, winning promotion to the Championship in 2014.

However, it seems the Brentford captain might not reach that landmark 250th outing for the West London club, with Sheffield Wednesday just 6/4 to sign the defender before the window shuts.

The South Yorkshire club have moved two centre-backs on this summer, shipping out Vincent Sasso and Claude Dielna, so the chances of Carlos Carvalhal adding another centre-half look very high.

But while Dean would be an ideal signing for the Hillsborough club, they’re one of a trio of Championship clubs hunting the Basingstoke native.

Newly-relegated Hull City are 4/1 to sign the former Bishop’s Stortford loanee, as they look to plug the gap left by Harry Maguire’s big-money exit to Leicester City.

Meanwhile, Leeds United are 9/2 shots to snap up the defender, with Thomas Christiansen having already made 12 summer signings in a bid to make this Whites team his own.
