Jose Mourinho made it very clear that he wanted to sign a top-quality defensive midfielder this summer, and he’s done just that.
The Special One has teamed up again with Nemanja Matic, who has moved to Manchester United from Chelsea for £40m.
And we say the deal is the Premier League Signing of the Week.
Granted, there wasn’t too much competition over the past few days, but this is a significant move from Man United.
The impact of N’Golo Kante over the past two seasons has highlighted how crucial the central defensive midfield role has become in the modern game.
Mourinho’s comments over the past few months have made obvious how eagerly he has been seeking his own kingpin in the middle.
And not many come better than Matic.
The Serbian is a two-time Premier League winner, and is one of the best at breaking up play and launching counter attacks.
He’s the latest piece of the puzzle as Mourinho looks to bring domestic glory back to Old Trafford.
It means the likes of Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard are free to roam forward, safe in the knowledge Matic is behind them to tidy up.
Mourinho has already moved to shore up United’s defence, with Victor Lindelof arriving from Benfica.
And Romelu Lukaku’s £75m arrival from Everton adds a clinical edge to the Red Devils’ attack.
Now with Matic to sit in the middle and keep things ticking over, plenty will be fancying the Premier League trophy to return to the Theatre of Dreams this season at 10/3.
