Mayweather v McGregor: can the double UFC champion win?

We’re ten days away from one of the biggest sporting events of the year in Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Conor McGregor. The question on everyone’s lips is: can the Irishman win?

Technically, yes. When two fighters – of any quality – step inside a ring, anything can happen. Think back to ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson v Buster Douglas in 1990.

The previously undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion, Tyson, was KO’d by the 42/1 underdog, Douglas, in what is still considered to be one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

McGregor is a dangerous animal – not least because of unpredictability, but his power, too. The Nevada State Commission has authorised the use of 8oz gloves when the general consensus was that they would be 10oz.

Who this will benefit more is up for debate. The lighter the gloves, the heavier the hits come at you.

The belief is that the UFC champion is the heavier hitter between the pair but many within boxing believe that Mayweather’s power increases substantially at 8oz.

To go back to the initial question, though, is it likely McGregor wins? The answer is probably no. The Dubliner has two hopes: bob hope, and little hope.

It’s his professional boxing debut, against the greatest practitioner of the sport in the last two decades. A fighter who has never been beaten and shipped little to no damage, despite bouts with the very best.

If McGregor can last more than six rounds, it should be seen as an achievement on his behalf. But of course, the Irishman believes he’s going to KO ‘Money’ inside two rounds, so… what do we know?
