Liverpool and Everton have both spent big already this summer and that could be about to continue in the coming days.

It has emerged that the Merseyside duo are both keeping tabs on German World Cup winner Benedikt Howedes.

The 29-year-old has been transfer listed by Schalke 04, which has put the Premier League duo on red alert.

We make Liverpool the early favourites to land the defender with Reds manager Jurgen Klopp 2/1 to sign his fellow countryman.

While the Anfield club have looked sharp going forward so far this season their defence is a different story.

Virgil van Dijk has been on Klopp’s radar all summer, but with a move for the Southampton ace now unlikely, the Reds look set to turn to Howedes.

At a cut-price £20m, Howedes makes practical and financial sense for Liverpool.

They could face competition from their cross-town rivals though, with Everton 7/2 to land the 6ft 2in defender.

The Blues are free-spending this summer and Howedes would add a level of international quality to a backline that is currently lacking in European experience.

And while city rival Klopp is lacking funds following the breakdown of Philippe Coutinho’s move to Barcelona, Everton boss Ronald Koeman has no such problems.
