Ladbrokes Prem Winners & Losers: St Johnstone ace in the good books

We’re four games into the Ladbrokes Premiership campaign, and already there have been a raft of dramatic twists and turns. Aberdeen are top of the table, St Johnstone bagged a point at Parkhead and Partick Thistle are enjoying precisely none of the luck going.

So, with the international break giving the Prem clubs a breather this weekend, we’ve taken the opportunity to look back at the winners and losers so far.

Winners:

Michael O’Halloran

Having failed to score a single goal in all competitions for Rangers last term, the St Johnstone ace (now in his second spell in Perth) has recaptured his form at McDiarmid Park. In fact, he’s arguably playing the best football of his career right now.

The 26-year-old has bagged four goals in as many games for an unbeaten Saints side, including the winner against each of Kilmarnock and Partick Thistle. Add an impressive display in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Celtic to that, and you have the league’s star performer so far.

Aberdeen

It seems nobody can match Derek McInnes’ men for character right now. The Dons continue to dig deep game after game, producing winning goals in the final 20 minutes of all four of their league games to date.

The North-East club have done it the hard way on several occasions already, coming from behind to win away to Ross County and Partick Thistle respectively. Next up is the visit of an out-of-sorts Heart of Midlothian to Pittodrie. We fancy the Reds to make it five wins from five…

The Celtic defence

St Johnstone may have dented the Hoops’ 100% start to the league campaign, but the Celtic backline still deserve plenty of credit. Brendan Rodgers’ men have conceded just two goals from their opening four league games.

In fact, they prevented Kilmarnock from managing a single shot on target at Rugby Park earlier this month, while Partick Thistle were limited to a total of four efforts during Celtic’s 1-0 win at Firhill on 11 August. Impressive stuff.

Losers:

Scott Fox

Having conceded 11 goals in his last five outings, the Ross County goalkeeper would have been hoping that a live TV game against Rangers would bring the best out of him.

That’s not quite how it transpired. Having knocked the ball past Gers forward Alfredo Morelos, the Staggies keeper simply stood still as the Colombian nipped back round and dispossessed him, before tapping into an empty net. Oh dear.

Partick Thistle

The Jags recorded their best league finish since 1981 last term, finishing sixth in the Premiership. However, things certainly aren’t going to plan so far this season, meaning the international break may have come at the ideal time for Alan Archibald and co. to regroup.

Admittedly, they’ve run Celtic (0-1) and Aberdeen (3-4) close at Firhill, but having lost all four league games to date, Thistle need to get the monkey off their back. A meeting with patchy Ross County next time out could be just the tonic for the Glasgow club.
