Forget Federer and Nadal, German star could be US Open champion
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal may be enjoying a renaissance in the Tennis Slams this year, but the new generation are waiting in the wings.
And one man in particular – Alex Zverev – could dethrone the two behemoths sooner rather than later.
The 20-year-old German picked up his fourth ATP title of the season last weekend, defeating Kevin Anderson to claim the Citi Open in America.
Zverev has also won the Italian Open in Rome (defeating Novak Djokovic in the final, no less) the Bavarian Championships and Open sud de France this year.
In total he’s reached five ATP Finals this season, and only Nadal can boast better than that.
And only a peak Federer on his beloved grass has been able to deny Zverev when it comes to finals in 2017.
The German only turned 20-years-old this April, but is enjoying a breakthrough campaign.
In addition to those four Tour victories, the youngster produced his best Slam run yet last time out at Wimbledon, progressing to the fourth round.
Even then, it took a man of Milos Raonic’s calibre a draining five sets to see off the German protégé.
All told, our traders have seen enough of Zverev to slash his odds of winning the US Open at Flushing Meadows this September.
After spending the first five months of the year as a 50/1 outsider, the youngster is now 12/1 fourth-favourite.
Only legendary trio Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray sit above him in the betting.
Zverev has been tipped as a future Slam winner for some time, but on current form it might well happen much sooner than expected.
