Everton’s £45m Sigurdsson deal is our Premier League Signing of the Week
They mean business, Everton – they really do. And the Toffees’ latest acquisition this summer wins our Premier League Signing of the Week award.
Having finally broken Swansea City’s resolve, Gylfi Sigurdsson arrived at Goodison Park earlier this week for a club-record £45m.
But if the Icelandic international can help Ronald Koeman’s side break into the top-six, or even the top-four, then he’ll have been worth every penny.
It’s an impressive move from the Toffees, who beat Leicester City – Premier League champions just two seasons ago – in the race for the ex-Tottenham Hotspur winger.
Sigurdsson will be joining an Everton frontline vastly different from that which guided the team to seventh last season.
Gone are Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley (probably) and in are Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and former hero Wayne Rooney.
Throw in Sigurdsson’s arrival and it’s a quartet blessed with a mix of quality and experience, one which is Everton’s strongest offensive line-up in a generation.
And in Sigurdsson, Goodison Park is now home to arguably the Premier League’s finest dead-ball talent.
The 28-year-old hit eight assists from set-pieces last term, the highest tally across all of the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1.
In total he supplied his Swansea team-mates 13 times last term, netting nine of his own as he proved instrumental in ensuring the Welsh club avoided the drop.
This time around his remit is of the opposite nature – get Everton into that top-six and beyond.
It won’t be easy, but if Sigurdsson brings that creative magic which lit up the Liberty Stadium so often, Everton will be having a big say in how the top six shakes out this season.
