Colchester United v Aston Villa: Villans value to beat the handicap

Published:

You’d be forgiven for seeing Carabao Cup fixtures on your Ladbrokes coupon and thinking it’s still pre-season. But no, it’s the new incarnation of the League Cup.

Aston Villa travel to Colchester United on Wednesday evening in the first round, kicking off at 19:45.

The Villans are 8/15 to get the win and that’s not a bad price considering the high-calibre squad at Steve Bruce’s disposal.

Changes will be made from their 1-1 league opener against Hull City a few days ago but the quality won’t be diluted all that much.

Conor Hourihane, Christopher Samba, James Bree, Birkir Bjarnason and Joshua Onomah are all likely to start.

In truth, while a point was slightly disappointing to open the campaign with, Bruce and Villa will feel aggrieved not to have got all three points. They missed several excellent chances against the Tigers and arguably could have been out of sight at half-time.

The U’s opened up their League Two season with a 3-1 defeat and while Villa will be seen as a huge scalp, John McGreal will have more pressing worries.

At 5/1, many will be tempted to back the lower league side, but the 31/20 on Villa to beat the -1 handicap looks a little more realistic.

Steve Bruce isn’t exactly known for free-flowing attacking football so a cheeky punt on the 0-2 Correct Score at 6/1 looks nice.

Gabby Agbonlahor looks set to start up front for the West Midlands side. The Brummie has started the season particularly well and at 9/2 First Goalscorer, we’re all over it.
