The 2017-18 Championship season kicks off in earnest this weekend in what looks like the most competitive campaign in years.

Middlesbrough and Aston Villa are our top two favourites for promotion but things get really interesting when we take a look at the betting for the Top Goalscorer market.

There have been a handful of big money moves in the striking department across the league, as well as some canny deals struck by some of the lower-ranked teams.

Check out our best bets on who’ll finish top of the pile come May next year..

The Favourites:

It’s hard to look past the players at the top of the market considering the outright betting.

With Villa and ‘Boro title favourites, it stands to reason the likes of Britt Assombalonga (8/1) and Jonathon Kodjia (9/1) top the pile.

Both will spearhead their sides’ promotion pushes so if they can remain injury free, they’re definitely good bets.

At 8/1 joint-favourite, Chris Wood looks a little short to us, frankly.

With Garry Monk having left Elland Road, Leeds United will be an unknown quantity under Thomas Christiansen so it’s hard to recommend backing the New Zealander.

Sheffield Wednesday will probably be there or thereabouts come May so a little dabble on Scottish fox-in-the-box Jordan Rhodes at 9/1 could be decent.

To cap the major contenders off, Scott Hogan at 10/1 is probably another to avoid.

The Villa striker has struggled since his big money January move to Villa Park with Steve Bruce unable to find a system to accomodate him.

The Outsiders:

We really like the look of the 25/1 about Rudy Gestede. While ‘Boro have been splashing the cash all summer, it’s a signing from last season that could do most damage.

Gestede has plenty of goals at this level with 20+ for Blackburn Rovers in 2014-15 and, should Assombalonga succumb to a dodgy injury record again, he could be the main man for Garry Monk.

Preston North End’s Jordan Hugill is a massively eye-catching 66/1.

Having notched 12 goals last season under Simon Grayson, his former manager is looking to reunite with him at Sunderland.

If Grayson can lift the gloom at the Stadium of Light, Hugill could play a huge part in bagging the goals to keep them in play-off contention.
