4x100m relay offers Bolt final chance to go out with a gold

Beaten by old rival Justin Gatlin in his final individual race, Usain Bolt isn’t quite done yet in his competitive swansong.

The greatest sprinter of all time has one last shot at gold in London’s World Athletics Championships, as he prepares for Jamaica’s 4x100m relay.

And he means business too, with the 30-year-old set to take part in the heats to ensure his team are in ship-shape for the final.

Bolt hasn’t always taken part in the preliminary rounds, but he’s the elder statesman of Jamaican sprinting now.

There’s a mix of youth and experience in this Jamaica squad, with Bolt hoping to guide Julian Forte (24) Sanoj-Jay Givens (23) and Michael Campbell (20) into a new era.

And if their future is anything like their past, then Jamaica will be just fine.

They’ve simply dominated this event in recent years, taking Olympic gold at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, setting the world record time 36.84secs in the former.

And the Caribbean nation can add the last four World Athletics Championships to that list too, stretching right back to Berlin in 2009.

They’ll be up against the USA once more, led by the 100m champion Gatlin. Japan, China and hosts Great Britain will also be looking to get among the medals.

But for the past decade they’ve all been left lagging far behind.

Jamaica are unbeaten in their last six 4x100m on the international scene, and the stage is set for Bolt to end with one more gold.
