Why fighting fit Sturridge can rescue his Liverpool career

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has told reporters today that Daniel Sturridge is in the best condition he has seen since he arrived in November 2015.

The pair have had a contentious relationship since the ex-Borussia Dortmund head coach arrived, with Sturridge’s injury record the major bone of contention.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City forward only managed 27 appearances in all competitions last season making just 11 starts.

Klopp has been at pains to point out, on a number of occasions, that if he cannot rely on him, then Sturridge, despite his obvious talent, will be moved on.

To put it frankly, this is a huge season for the England international. If he can remain fit, there are few better forwards in the league. Quick, skilful, a deadly finisher and quality link player, Sturridge is easily a 20-goal-a-season striker.

For too long, though, various injuries have hampered him, and this Liverpool side. Klopp has been forced to rely on either Divock Origi up top or Roberto Firmino in a false number nine role – neither of which is ideal.

With the likes of Sadio Mane, Phlippe Coutinho, Firmino, Origi, Adam Lallana, Georgino Wijnaldum and new boys Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke, the Reds have quite the offensive arsenal to choose from.

What the really need, though, is a fit and firing Daniel Sturridge at the tip of the attack, with the likes of Mane, Coutinho and Salah dovetailing behind him.

Should an early season injury strike, one would fear for his Liverpool career at this stage. At just 27-years-old, though, Sturridge still has the world at his feet.
