Renewed confidence in Spieth and McIlroy for USPGA after Open joy

With the dust settling on a quite thrilling four days of Open golf at Royal Birkdale, attention now turns to the US PGA Championship.
And for Sunday’s victor Jordan Spieth, next month’s trip to the final Major of the year at Quail Hollow offers up a tantalising proposition – a career Grand Slam.
The American would become the youngest player ever to achieve the feat, and would join just five other men to have done so in the modern era.
But he faces plenty of strong competition next month. Indeed he isn’t even favourite in the betting.
McIlroy appeared down and out at Birkdale, floundering to five over after just six holes on round one.
But in a remarkable turnaround, the four-time Major winner salvaged a one-over 71, before a trio of sub-70s saw him finish in a fine fourth in what was his best performance of the season.
And it’s ensured he remains at the very top of the betting for Quail Hollow in North Carolina.
Rory boasts a remarkable record at the US PGA too. Champion in 2012 and 2014, the 28-year-old boasts three other top-ten finishes since 2009.
He and Spieth are joined at the top of the betting by Dustin Johnson, with the trio returning to their usual odds of 10/1 and under.
DJ is 9/1, though he’s been very hit and miss in the final Major of the year, with four top-tens sitting alongside two missed cuts and a T48.
Henrik Stenson and Jason Day come up next at 16/1, with Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm and Rickie Fowler sure to appeal at 20s.
US Open winner Brooks Koepka is a 25/1 shot, ahead of Justin Rose and Masters champion Sergio Garcia at 28/1.
