Konta is in the semi-finals – and can beat Wimbledon legend Venus

Johanna Konta is the first British player to reach the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles semi-final in 39 years – and she’s odds-on to make the final.

A superb three-set victory over world number two Simona Halep saw Konta become the first Brit since Virginia Wade in 1978 to reach the last four at SW19.

And now the 26-year-old faces five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams.

The American is enjoying a renaissance this season, despite turning 37-years-old last month.

Incredibly, two of her opponents at Wimbledon this year weren’t even born when she made her Slam debut in 1997.

But according to the odds, Williams’ hopes of a famous sixth SW19 title could be coming to an end.

Konta is the 8/11 favourite, with Venus at 11/10.

This will be the pair’s sixth meeting, with Konta taking three of the previous five clashes.

They’ve all been close contests however, and there’s no reason to expect anything different here.

With three of their meetings going to a third set, the 6/5 on over 2.5 sets looks a promising angle.

Similarly, should it go to a deciding set, you’d fancy Konta – 11 years Venus’ junior – to be in better shape, leading to a Konta victory in three sets at 10/3.

The banker looks to be over 21.5 games at 4/6. Four of their five meetings have seen 22 games or more, and in a crunch Wimbledon semi-final, we’re unlikely to see a one-sided match-up.

In terms of the outright odds, Konta is 12/5 second favourite, behind Garbine Muguruza (13/8).

But Konta is 2-1 up in her head-to-heads with the Spaniard, and is 2-0 versus Magdalena Rybarikova.

So there’s nothing for her to fear at this stage, and there’s every reason that the Brit really can become the first home Ladies winner in 40 years.
