Johnson and Kuchar lead top-line field at Canadian Open

Though most of us are still marvelling over Jordan Spieth’s sensational performance to win last week’s Open at Royal Birkdale, the PGA Tour is back in action.

And it’s off to Canada for the Canadian Open, one of the oldest tournaments in Golf.

It offers a quick opportunity for many who were at Birkdale to bounce back or maintain momentum, especially with the final Major of the year – the US PGA – less than a month away.

This event  has a habit of throwing up unusual results though, such as last year where Jhonattan Vegas came through, and 2009 for Nathan Green’s sole PGA Tour win.

We’ve picked out six men set to feature heavily at Glen Abbey this weekend…

Dustin Johnson @ 13/2

When it comes to the betting, Dustin Johnson usually sits in the top three spots, alongside Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.

That was the case at last week’s Open, but it was the latter pair who went on to finish fourth and first respectively, while DJ was left in T54.

With Spieth and McIlroy elsewhere this weekend, Johnson holds clear favouritism at 13/2. Is enduring a four-month winless run but was runner-up here last year and always demands consideration.

Matt Kuchar @ 11/2

It will be fascinating to see how Matt Kuchar goes about this weekend at Glen Abbey.

Beaten only by an unstoppable Jordan Spieth at the Open last week, Kuchar’s search for a Major continues.

Can he continue that form from Birkdale? Or will Sunday’s defeat still be weighing on his mind? Either way, three successive top-10s at the Canadian Open shows he’s more than comfortable at Glen Abbey.

Charlie Hoffman @ 25/1

After the two favourites in DJ and Kuchar, the odds drift to Charlie Hoffman. The American is yet to win this season, but he’s been close and heads to Ontario in decent form.

Was eighth at the US Open and third in the Travelers Championship last month, and a solid T20 at Birkdale last week leaves Hoffman very much in good stead.

Bubba Watson @ 28/1

He’s failed to land a Top-20 in his last 11 Majors, and is coming up for 18 months winless on the PGA Tour.

But Bubba Watson was runner-up here two years ago, and he does appeal for a small wager at 28s.

Tony Finau @ 28/1

Having made 11 of his last 13 cuts, Tony Finau has a knack of still being in the mix through the weekend.

And he’s often turned that into very good results, including T7 at the Greenbrier earlier this month before a steady run to T27 at the Open. A solid option for a Top-5 or Top-10 finish this weekend.

Ian Poulter @ 40/1

For a brief while it looked like Ian Poulter was on course for a glorious Open success.

He’ll be annoyed he didn’t turn his opening day 67 into something more than T14, and that’s exactly why he should be worth considering this weekend.

A second at the Players Championship and T11 at the Heritage earlier this year also suggests Poulter’s been having a decent time of it across the pond.
