It’s time to get serious about Everton winning a trophy this season

Published:

It’s been 22 years since Everton last won a major trophy, but the Toffees might not have to wait much longer, given their summer spending spree.

Jordan Pickford and Davy Klaassen have already joined Ronald Koeman’s side for a combined £54m, and more arrivals are on the way.

Michael Keane and Sandro Ramirez are both expecting to join the Goodison Park outfit in the next day or two.

And with Gylfi Sigurdsson, Olivier Giroud and Andre Gray also linked with a move, it’s clear Everton want to make serious headway.

They mean business and they should now be tipped as major contenders for silverware.

It may still be a touch beyond the Merseysiders to get the better of all of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United over a full Premier League campaign however.

Odds of 80/1 reflect as much.

But while a league tilt may be out of reach, the Toffees look excellently placed for a cup win this season.

With the top six likely to be falling over themselves to land the Premier League or a spot in the top-four – and five of them trying to compete in the Champions League too – the door is wide open for Everton to claim the FA or League Cup.

The Toffees are no strangers to a good cup run, and reached the FA Cup final in 2009.

Two-time semi-finalists in the years since then, they look great value at 14/1 to go all the way this season.

It’s a similar story in the League Cup, with Everton 16/1 shots.

After finishing 16-points behind the top-four last season, closing that gap will be a key objective for Everton and their new signings this term.

But there’s only one way they can fully vindicate spending such big sums in one transfer window – and that’s by winning trophies.
