Federer now odds-on for Wimbledon as big four stumble

For a while we thought the big four of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were set to dominate Wimbledon this year.

But how wrong we were.

Injuries did for Murray and Djokovic in the quarters, while Nadal, so imperious in the French Open a month ago, was beaten a round earlier by Gilles Muller.

And now we’re at the semi-final stage and just one of that quartet remains – Mr Federer.

The Fed Express was pre-tournament favourite, but his odds have been slashed as his main rivals have departed SW19.

It’s now 1/3 that Federer lands an eighth Wimbledon crown.

And with his regular rivals down and out, the Swiss maestro is joined by some more unusual names in the last four.

Tomas Berdych will face Federer in the semis in what is only the Czech’s seventh appearance at this stage of a Slam from 54 attempts.

But it’s the other semi-final that nobody would have seen coming – Marin Cilic versus Sam Querrey.

This is the American’s first appearance this late in a Slam, while it’s only the fourth time Cilic has got this far.

The trio have it all to do if they’re to deny Federer at his favourite event though, and the odds suggest as much.

With the Swiss maestro at odds-on, Cilic is next best at 4/1 to claim his second Slam, following on from the US Open in 2014.

Berdych is 12/1 for his first Slam win, while Querrey is the outsider at 20s to become America’s first Slam champion since Andy Roddick in 2003.
