Dunfermline transfer news

With Dunfermline Athletic looking to secure promotion from the Ladbrokes Championship this term, they could scarcely have done a better bit of business than adding Dean Shiels to their ranks.

The Pars newboy won promotion from this level with Rangers back in 2015-16 – having been involved in every step of the Ibrox club’s rise from four-tier to Premiership.

Add to that Shiels’ pedigree elsewhere – playing in the Europa League, World Cup Qualifiers for Northern Ireland, and helping Dundalk to a League of Ireland Premier Division title last year – and it’s clear he could be the crucial difference-maker this term.

While experience is possibly the biggest feather in his cap, the 32-year-old has also cemented a reputation as an extremely versatile performer. During his time with most recent club FC Edmonton, he played in five different positions.

Though his strike rate isn’t as strong as in his younger days, he’s a scorer of important goals, with his latest a vital winner for Edmonton in their NASL meeting with Puerto Rico FC.

Having also bagged the Northern Irishman on a free, the Pars have got themselves a bit of a bargain.

Next up for Dunfermline is Saturday’s League Cup clash with Peterhead at East End Park, with the hosts 1/4 favourites for victory.
