Bookies face record payout on a Murray & Konta Wimbledon double

Published:

We could be set to lose record amounts at Wimbledon this year if Andy Murray and Johanna Konta complete a famous British double in the Men’s and Ladies tournaments.

While Murray was an unpopular selection before a ball was served at SW19, the Scot has since become one of the most backed players in the competition.

Despite the patriotic punting however, the Scot’s price has held firm at 11/2 to go all the way.

Konta was 12/1 a week ago, but her odds have since tumbled in the wake of her fine victory over Donna Vekic and the exit of pre-tournament favourite Karolina Pliskova.

The 26-year-old is now 9/2 favorite to be Britain’s first Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles champion since 1977.

We can report that they’ve seen record numbers placed on a Men’s and Ladies double of Murray and Konta both winning (currently 35/1), with plenty backing that outcome at 90/1 a week ago (when Murray was 6/1 and Konta was 12/1).

That would leave us facing a multi-million pound payout for the double alone.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It’s rare we find ourselves in a position like this, but Serena Williams’ absence has blown the door wide open for a patriotic double for punters.”

“Both Murray and Konta have been great so far, and that’s left plenty thinking it could be a record-breaking Wimbledon for Britain.”
