Watford lead charge for Middlesbrough man but Burnley still keen

Despite suffering relegation from the Premier League last term, Middlesbrough’s defence enhanced their reputation by chalking up an impressive 11 clean sheets. But one of those key cogs could be off to pastures new, with Watford just 5/4 to sign George Friend.

The 29-year-old captained the Teesside outfit for much of the campaign, with the club taking points away to the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal with Friend wearing the armband.

Though he missed a chunk of the campaign with injury, he still did plenty to catch the eye of fellow Premier League gaffers, with his composed defensive play, energy and range of crossing making the left-back one of the Boro’s top performers.

However, fans of the Riverside outfit will most likely have to adjust to life without him next term, with favourites Watford followed closely in the betting by Burnley and Newcastle United.

The Clarets are 7/2 shots to add the former Doncaster Rovers ace to their ranks, though with the future of boss Sean Dyche in the balance, that price could be set to change at a moment’s notice.

Meanwhile, there’s 9/2 on offer for Newcastle United to snap up the defender from their North-East rivals, as Rafael Benitez looks to add more Premier League to his ranks ahead of the club’s return to English football’s top table.
